Every Paint Color in Our Home, and How We Picked Them

Stair Hall

Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore, high gloss finish

When we decided to renovate our stair hall we knew we would have to paint the trim instead of restoring it back to it’s original wood. I KNOW, it’s controversial but the wood was in such bad condition from years of being beat up that we had to fill and patch a lot of it. We also had to add new sections to the stair that were not original and would’ve looked strange left bare. We were pleasantly surprised with how striking the navy paint turned out and are so happy with the outcome! We chose a high gloss finish for the wainscoting, door, baseboards, handrail and balusters, with a high gloss floor paint for the stair treads. The gloss brings out the beautiful millwork and is easy to wipe.

Living Room (and most of the house)

Simply White by Benjamin Moore, walls and ceiling in eggshell and trim in satin finish

We knew that we wanted to go white in most areas of the house for a few reasons. White is easy to repair and repaint. White is readily available and it makes a space feel open and clean (until it gets dirty.) We rent out our home for photo and film shoots regularly so we needed to keep the walls simple to fix! We love the balance of warm and cool tones with Simply White, especially when it’s varied with multiple sheens in a space. We painted the walls, picture frame molding and ceiling in eggshell and painted the crown molding, door frames, window frames and ceiling medallions in a satin finish. Light just bounces around in the prettiest way.

Parlor Bathroom

This room was another sprint project as I was wrapping up my masters degree at Pratt Institute and my family was quickly arriving to celebrate my graduation! Deadlines really make you move fast. We were excited to bring a depth to this small and narrow bathroom with tall robust wall moldings (Will built it all from scratch) in a watery Blue-Green. As the light shifts during the day the color also changes from a dark Teal to a faded Blue-Grey. We paired it with a very glossy Navy floor tile from Fireclay that adds to the watery effect.

Kitchen

This was an impossible choice at the time! We were pushing to finish this kitchen in time for my mom to come visit right after we had Theo. We initially went for a darker Tan but felt like it made the space feel too dark. For the time being, an off-white with a warm undertone felt safe and nice. Now we’re thinking of adding an actual color! If you have any ideas let me know!
